HELP NEEDED- sleep issues

My baby is eight months old. Iv been working on getting him to sleep in his crib for basically these whole eight months.
He has never Co sleeper in the bed and has always been placed in seperate surface (basset as a newborn) and cot now.
He is quiet easy to get to sleep if in my arms, it usually only takes 5-10minutes for him to fall asleep and he doesn’t really try to fuss or fight it. He is content and happy to fall asleep for naps and night time sleep if in my arms. He will only nap for long periods of time (1hour-1 hour 30 mins) if he is cradled in my arms. If I put him the cot once he is asleep he will only sleep for a short period (about 20minutes.) if I try to put him in the cot drowsy but awake he flippes out. He screams, he bangs his head on side of cot, he kicks the cot. He becomes very distressed.
I have tried nap training and sleep training many times since he turned 5 months old with no luck. Iv tried the control cry out method recommended to me by my pediatrician but my baby doesn’t not respond well to it and will cry for over an hour and not show any signed of going to sleep at all. Then i have tried not going into the room at all and it’s even worse he almost vomits and chocked he gets that worked up.
Iv also tied a gentler approach where i will stay but his cot and pat or rub and try to comfort him but he seems to get even more worked up.

As I said iv been working on this for quite some time. The only improvement is that iv seemed to remove his sleep crutch which used to be nursing to sleep. He now will just suck his own hand to sleep while I hold him tight.

So atm this is how it is.
NAPS: Baby will have all his naps in my arms. 2-3 naps a day. His awake periods are two and a half - three hours. If I do go out he will usually fall alseep and have a nap in the car also. So it’s either me or the car. Very rarely the cot.
NIGHT TIME SLEEP: after my baby bed time routine (bath, massage, bedtime story, last feed). Baby will become very drowsy and fall asleep in my arms. I am then able to transfer him to his crib and he will sleep in his crib in his nursery with it being pitch black and sound machine on (lullaby). Then his nights are random. Some nights he will only wake up once in the night for a feed, some nights he will wake up six times.
It’s very hard to judge my babies sleep pattern. The naps seem to be the worst issue here as it’s getting hard to just sit around all day with him nappy on me and not being able to put him down to get jobs done around the house.

I need help, and suggestion would be great.
