Activists to encourage for infants and activities to avoid:
To some people I may seem like a very over responsible, over protective mother but I just try to do the best by my baby. They are still so new to the world, So these are the things I encourage and things I avoid when it comes to my little one.
Encourage:
Play- Play is really important for babies, it’s how they learn and develop. I try to do a variety of different play scenarios everyday so my baby stays interested and has fun!
Reading- reading to your baby is also very beneficial. I started ready to my baby since he was a week old. He loves listening to the words and sounds I make and looking at the picture, also feeling the texture of the books.
Talking- of course talking as much as you can to your baby will help them develop those language skills. Try talking out loud and explaining everything you do with them.
Outdoors- it’s great to get some fresh air with your baby. Either a walk to the park or out in the back garden will get them to notice the nature around them. Just make sure to keep them protected from the sun with Slip, slop, slap. And try to stay in the shade.
Walks- Whether it’s a walk to the park or even around a shopping centre, getting out with your baby to see the world in a save environment is great for mummy and baby.
Social interaction- being around people and even other babies is good for the social side of things. Find a near by mothers group or have an outing to your friends or close family.
Swimming- my baby is in swimming lessons once a week and he absolutely loves it! The swimming pools are safe for babies and are at a correct warm temperature that babies can handle. It is a good little work out and a great skill to learn, not to mention fun!
Play date- as said before being around other children is good for your little one so making friends with other mums is fun for baby and mamma. Invite them over for a play date or even meet at your local cafe. Babies can enjoy coffee dates too! Just make sure you pack their milk or a snack!
Church- if you have a religion, taking your baby to church early is a great thing to do. It will get them used to it and become more familiar with your families religion.
Avoid:
Movie theatres- It’s best to stay away from the theatre when your Bub is so young. The big, bright screen is to much for your babies eyes and the surround sound is to loud for your babies little ears, it can actually bust their ear drums!
Not to mention it most likely will distribute the other movie goers as your tiny baby wouldn’t be able to make it threw the whole film without a cry or two. So I suggest just watch a movie at home or try to find a baby sitter so you can have a date to see that new big film.
Although, some movie theatres do provided a baby session where they dim the screen, and lower the sound so babies can cope, so that could be an option if you want to have a movie day with your other children too.
Circus- another event which may be to much is a circus. The load sounds and a lot of commotion may be too much for them. Also there are a lot of germs flying around circus’s and you wouldn’t want to risk getting your baby sick. So I’d say avoid this until your baby is well over one. This goes for carnivals as well.
Staying out to late/ late dinners- We avoid staying out late with our baby as he gets too tired if it’s past his bed time and becomes very irritable and I just feel bad for the little guy! But for some people it’s not an option and they have to take them out so just provide a safe place for baby to sleep/rest like their pram.
Play activities are not ready for yet- you know your baby and what developmental stage they are at.
Hot tubs or pools to cold or creeks-
Hot tubs are not appropriate for a little baby because of course it’s too hot! Also be careful with the water being to cold if you take your baby to a regular swimming pool, that also goes for creeks. Plus you never know what nastys are lurking in creeks!
Screen time- that includes TV, iPads or mobile phones. It’s said that it is best to avoid the screen till around about the age of two. If a child sits around paying attention to a screen they are less likely to want to play and use there imagination. But I believe in moderation and if using appropriate content, it is fine. My baby never touches my devices but does occasionally watch a bit of a Disney movie or giggle and hoot on the tv. His favourite is Snow White!
Salons- it may be tempting to take your baby along to the hair or nail appointment but just think of all the chemicals in the air your baby my be breathing in. So try and find a sitting so you can have a break and get yourself pampered!
So it important to remember that you parent how you want to parent. If you feel comfortable doing these things then go for it but always keep your baby as safe as possible and think of them first.
Much love
