Our summer activities

 Our summer activities

Below is a list of the activities we partake in during the Aussie summertime. It’s important to keep our children cool in this heat plus keep busy and have fun!

Visiting the local pool-

Of course the pool in a no brainer. My son loves our local pool which has a kids splash pad plus large water slides which is perfect for my little thrill seeker. Insure your children are always pool and sun safe ☀️

Water play-

On shadier afternoons I like to take my son outside for some water play. This could include a swim in our kiddie pool or water play in our water and sand table or even just using the hose to water the garden. (But always unsure your being water conscious) x

Ice play-

There are heaps of activities that you can do with ice. Some of our favourites include freezing animal toys in an ice cube tray and once frozen, break the ice to free all the animals. Or Using food colouring, freeze coloured ice then place in your water table for fun scooping play. You could also freeze a large chunk of ice (or again small ice cubes) place in a bowl and paint the ice. My son loves all of these.

Scavenger hunt-

On cooler mornings we love to go on an early walk and do a nature scavenger hunt. I will just print out a list (you can find many on Pinterest) and my son has a ball finding all the little things on his list.

Indoor play-

Of course you can crank up the air conditioning and do indoor play. We love to play with open ended materials along with constructive blocks. Just follow your child’s interests.

Movie time-

Films can be a super nice time to cuddle and bond with your child. Get cozy, get your snacks and watch your child’s favourite movie together. My three year olds favourites right now are ‘The nightmare before Christmas’ , ‘Howls moving castle’ and ‘Frozen’.

Indoor playgrounds and arcades-

On hot days indoor playgrounds are great. My son will literally play for hours in the soft play area and is kept cool. He is also a big fan of our local arcade. We just make sure we follow all COVID requirements and use LOTS of sanitiser during these times 😂 x

Craft

Staying indoor on really hot days and doing craft activities is perfect. There are sooooo many different types of simple crafts you can do with your child depending on their age. Some of our go to’s are water colour painting, collage, nature painting, threading, and pasting. There really is endless ideas out there, get creative!

Sensory play-

Sensory play is a great mode of play of all ages, we like to incorporate sensory materials in our small world play. So for example I will use a tray of water with sea creatures figurines for oceanic play or use lentils/ rice in a try with our dinosaur toys. Maybe try using nature we collected that have natural textures along with our safari animals. These all make really fun small world play your child will love.

Reading corner-

A cozy cool reading corner is a great idea. I like to set up different spaces to change it up from time to time. So we might have a cozy area with pillows and blankets on our arm chair. I might pull out our large Tee pee tent and add fairy light for a magical looking reading nook, or even make a fort and choose our favourite books to read together inside. Books are the best x

Science experiments-

We love doing science experiments! There are some super fun safe ones you can do with younger children. A go to for us is making a volcano irruption. In a bowl add baking soda and then pour in red coloured vinegar and watch how the ‘volcano’ erupts! It’s even more exiting if you add a toy volcano mould and some toy Dino’s!

Some other super easy ones are experimenting making slime or different sorts of play dough. Head to Pinterest from inspo!

Pirate treasure

With the same concept of the scavenger hunt you can print out or draw your own pirate map and either get outside or hide the treasure somewhere in your home for your child to find! Dress up as a pirate for extra fun!

Baking, cooking, creating!-

Have quality time indoors by cooking with your kids. Let them help and participate in the process x

Extra Hot tips-

A few simple summer tips I always use is to carry and extra hat, sunscreen and water bottle in you backpack.

Dress them for the weather- a sleeved cool shirt. Shoes! Slip slip slap.

Notice the signs of if your child is becoming too hot on the outing even if they don’t tell you.

Keep a small clip fan attached to the car seat for extra air flow.

I also like to keep a cooler bag with a spray bottle of cold water and ice packs to lay on the car seat while on an outing. Once you get back to your very hot car you can spray the cold water spray into the baby seat belts to cool then down ( because those things get hot).

Keep you child hydrated and you can also make you own ice blocks using just coconut water and food colouring- no sugar woo.

So there are a few cool things to do during the summer time. Stay safe everyone ✌️
