Tips For Teething Babies
Teething is one of the many had hurdles that our babies and ourselves experience within the early times of childhood. The most common signs of teeth are of course- Dribbling, drooling and extra saliva, having red cheeks and sometimes a ‘teething’ rash around their mouth, a desire to chew and bite down on anything and everything, loose nappies, fussiness, swollen gums or indication of tooth eruption.
Our little ones are constantly growing and changing and developing and pain can be a part of that so here are a few times to make our babies a little more comfortable during the teething phase.
Chilled washcloths : Place a wet washcloth in the freezer for a couple minutes, so it’s cold but not frozen, and then offer it your Bub to chew on. It can help soothe the discomfort of teething, Or with clean hands use the chilled washcloth with your finger and gently massage your baby’s gums over the areas where they’re teething.
Chilled Fruits: if your baby is on solids you can offer chilled cucumber slices or bananas. I liked to place chilled berries in a baby fruit sucker for my baby boy to suck on.
Keep hydrated: Keeping your baby full and hydrated through milk or water helps them feel regulated and if your breast feeding, offer the breast when ever you can to sooth and comfort baby.
Teethers and Toys: teething toys can be so helpful and there are so many on the market but I would recommend ‘Sophie the Giraffe Teething Toy’ she was literally my sons best friend during teething time. It’s such a great size for your baby to hold onto, there are so many little places for your child to chew on and it’s made for a good material. It will really last you.
‘Tommee Tippee Cool Fish Teether’ is also a great one you can chill (not freeze) for your baby.
Pain Relief: following the recommended dosage, infant/Children Panadol (paracetamol) and Neurofen (ibuprofen) can be used for pain relief.
Teething gels: teething gels for me are a tricky one, personally I found the most generic ones not to have much effect on my baby so I would recommend talking to your babies paediatrician about oral gels. My paediatrician prescribed a great gel for me that worked to sooth my sons gums.
Oral care: even from when the first tooth pops through it’s important to take care of those little teeth. So brushing your child’s teeth and gums morning and night to establish a oral care routine is key. You can start with using a soft wash cloth or a soft Nuby Nana Nubs Massaging Toothbrush (silicon brush) and just water to gently brush the little teeth and then move onto the soft baby tooth brush and suitable baby toothpaste when you feel comfortable.
Maintain a Routine: Extra difficult sleepers can be a common sign of teething so keeping baby’s sleep schedule on point, as well as having all their routines in place to help make them feel comfortable. Warm baths and Extra cuddles is also a plus.
Above all Comfort and patience is the best thing I could recommend for you and your precious ones. 🙏🏻 take care x
